How Can You Discover Your Personal Talents?
A real problem for many people is discovering their true gifts and talents.
When we were born, we already possessed our gifts and talents. Unfortunately, we must find out for ourselves what those gifts and talents are to be truly happy.
I believe that we can find contentment in a career by using one of these skills, but we won’t realize our full potential for joy and happiness until we discover what our real gifts and talents are and develop them.
We will be successful when we’re doing what we were designed to do. That means that it is important that we discover our gifts and talents and then develop them.
When I discovered my talents…
I was very lucky, because God told me as a little boy that I was to be a teacher giving me a sense of purpose in life. I never doubted that it would happen or that I would be able to do it. Even though in my twenties I knew nothing I could teach anyone and was so introverted that I couldn’t talk to two people without getting flustered, I persevered. Just like magic, the doors in life opened to me and finally led me to be a professor at age twenty-nine.
The first time I stepped into a classroom, I loved it and had that feeling of being off in another world. By being persistent, I was ready when the opportunities presented themselves.
During my career, I was often offered better paying jobs with more prestige, but I never for one minute considered accepting any of them. I was doing what I was designed to do, so it would have been foolish to change my career.
If we are truly happy with our job, it is probably not because of the money but because we are utilizing our gifts and talents. Conversely, if we are unhappy with our job, it is probably not because of the money but because we are not able to fully use our gifts and talents.
There is an old saying, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
Discovering Your Unique Talent
Often people haven’t spent much time trying to figure out what their true gifts and talents are. Usually we are so busy going and doing in today’s society that we don’t stop and contemplate. In this age of electronics, people are often involved with some form of communication or entertainment device. Many people just don’t take the time to think.
While driving in the car, we have time to contemplate life and our future. When we go for a walk or exercise we have time to use our minds for reflection. Every day there are opportunities to think about the purpose of our time spent on earth.
Discovering our talents requires that we take some time to stop and contemplate our lives. Doing so may mean reading books and doing some exercises to determine what our gifts are. Whatever method we use, we need to take definite action toward discovering our gifts and talents.
- One approach is to think of what has made us extremely happy in the past.
- Another is to talk to family members, friends and teachers and ask them what they think our gifts and talents might be.
- A third method is to review what types of work we have done and see what we were very good at.
Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to finding our gifts and talents. The two methods that I would recommend above all the others are prayer and meditation.
Your subconscious mind or your Spirit may have the answer. If you pray, you are asking your Spirit what you want to know. At the same time your subconscious mind picks up what you are looking for. When you meditate you are listening to your subconscious mind and your Spirit. We should pray and meditate until we receive the answer.
